Uncle Ron's Hamburger and Peas Recipe

Here's a dish my mother used to make for us back when I was growing up in our home in Chicago...It's simple and tasty...I have Googled it and found one recipe by the same name but it is nothing like my Mother's...It sounds good though...

Hamburger and Peas
(over Boiled Potatoes)

Ingredients

1-lb. ground beef or venison
1 med. onion chopped
1-can of peas (15 oz.) drained
1-can of diced tomatoes (15 oz.) w/ juice
2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup water or coffee
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Brown beef in a large skillet (add a little butter if using venison) ...Add onion and stir until onion starts to clear...Add tomatoes, peas, Worcestershire sauce and  water (or leftover morning coffee)...Salt and pepper and bring to a boil and then turn down the heat and simmer for a half hour...Serve over boiled peeled potatoes...

number of servings: 4-6

This is delicious on cold fall or winter nights...

This sounds good. Except I think I'll substitute the peas with eith fresh or frozen..better flavor in my opinion.

I'll let you know how we like it. Thanks.

My mother always used canned large size peas...I guess that's why I still use them as well...I never like eating large peas on a plate but they seem to taste okay when mixed with ground beef, onions and tomatoes...If I eat peas by themselves I prefer the small early ones or frozen...

Ron - "I prefer the small early ones"

I was never been a big fan of peas, being brought up on canned peas. But, several years ago (don't ask how many) we were camping in Maryland and went to a local fruit/vegtable stand. My wife wanted tome peas and she noticed that they were fresh. Having never had them, I agreed (with my nose kind of up in hte air) and bought some. WOW, what a difference. I couln't believe they were the same thing. It's kind of like having Tuna out of a can and then getting some fresh Tuna. Yum!!!

We lived in Chicago in a Bohemian area and I was brought up on that receipe except for we didn't put tomatoes in it and no coffee. My Mom alway served it over mashed potatoes and I am making it today for dinner. It is 3.4 degrees here today. Thanks for the memories.
